The Best Haircare Routine for Dry, Damaged Hair
Hair With MONAT · Updated August 24, 2026 · 7 min read

Dryness and damage often travel together, but they are not the same problem. Dryness is a moisture deficit. Damage is a structural one. A routine that only addresses one leaves you frustrated with the other.
A weekly plan
- Wash day one: BOND IQ™ Shampoo and Conditioner, leave-in crème, recovery serum on the ends.
- Wash day two: RENEW Shampoo with REPLENISH Masque for ten minutes.
- Mid-week: REJUVENIQE® Oil on dry ends as needed.
- Every night: silk pillowcase, loose plait, no tight elastics.
Rethinking heat
Heat is the fastest way to undo everything else in this routine. Air-dry to 80% before blow-drying, drop your flat iron temperature and accept one extra pass at a lower setting rather than one pass at maximum.
How to tell it is working
- Wet detangling takes less time.
- Fewer short broken hairs on your shoulders and in the sink.
- Ends look less see-through in bright light.
- Your hair holds a style for longer.
Dry and damaged are two problems that have to be solved together
Dryness is a lipid and water deficit. Damage is a structural deficit. Most people with dry, damaged hair have both, and treating only one is why routines stall. Pour moisture into a fibre with broken bonds and it leaks straight back out. Pile on protein and bond products without moisture and the hair turns stiff, rough and snappy.
The order matters. Structure first, moisture second, seal third, protect fourth. Every routine below follows that order, and the ratio between structure and moisture shifts as the hair recovers.
Use the wet-stretch test as your instrument. A wet hair that stretches a long way and stays stretched wants structure. One that snaps immediately with no give wants moisture. Retest every two weeks and adjust, rather than changing the whole routine on a hunch.
The core routine, product by product
Cleanse: BOND IQ Shampoo on the days when structure is the priority, RENEW Shampoo on the days when comfort and hydration are. Two short washes, scalp only, rinse thoroughly.
Condition: BOND IQ Conditioner or RENEW Conditioner on mid-lengths and ends, combed through with a wide-tooth comb and left for two to three minutes.
Weekly treatment: REPLENISH Masque on damp hair, twenty minutes, gentle heat, ends and mid-lengths only.
Leave-on: BOND IQ Leave-In Crème on every wash for protection, or RESTORE Leave-In Conditioner when slip and hydration are the priority.
Seal: REJUVENIQE Oil Intensive on damp ends, one to four drops depending on thickness.
Targeted finish: REJUVABEADS on the last two inches for the appearance of split, frayed ends, and the BOND IQ Recovery Serum on the sections that see the most heat.

A weekly schedule you can put on the bathroom wall
Sunday: full reset. Bond cleanse, masque for twenty minutes, leave-in, oil on ends, air-dry or low heat. This is the anchor of the week and the one session worth protecting in your diary.
Wednesday: maintenance wash. Hydrating cleanse and conditioner, leave-in, one drop of oil, heatless style or a low-temperature blow-dry over a protectant.
Friday: refresh only if needed. Water mist with leave-in, oil on ends, low bun or braid.
Every night: silk or satin pillowcase, hair tied loosely with a fabric scrunchie, never a tight elastic in the same place twice.
Every ten to twelve weeks: a trim. This is not optional in a damage-recovery routine, because a split travels upwards and cutting it is the only thing that stops it.
Heat, tools and the mechanics of not making it worse
Dry to eighty percent before any hot tool. Straightening damp hair forces internal water to steam and blisters the cortex, and it is the single most damaging common habit.
Lower the temperature. Most hair styles perfectly well below 180 degrees Celsius, and one slow pass beats three fast ones.
Protect every time. A leave-in plus a drop of oil on the ends is the minimum, and the ends need it most because they are the oldest part of the fibre.
Change the tools. Wide-tooth comb on wet hair only, microfibre towel instead of terry, fabric scrunchies instead of elastics with metal, and a brush with flexible bristles for dry hair.
Limit chemical services while you recover, and if you must colour, talk to your stylist about depositing colour rather than lifting it, and about a bond additive during the service.

The non-product factors that show up in your hair
Hair is built from protein and it is a low-priority tissue, which means the body deprioritises it when anything else is under strain. Iron, vitamin D, thyroid function, rapid weight loss and prolonged stress all show up in hair condition and shedding, usually two to three months after the event.
Hard water leaves mineral deposits that make hair feel permanently coated and dry. A monthly clarifying wash followed immediately by a masque, or a shower filter, addresses it.
Sun, chlorine and salt water all roughen the cuticle. Wet the hair with clean water and apply a leave-in before swimming so the fibre absorbs that instead of pool water, and rinse immediately afterwards.
Sleep and hydration are not a haircare cliché, they are inputs. A routine cannot outperform a deficiency, and if hair loss or extreme brittleness persists despite a good routine, a blood test is a better next step than another bottle.

Milestones: what to expect and when
Wash one to three: better slip, easier detangling, more shine. This is surface improvement and it is real, but it is not recovery.
Week three to six: visibly less breakage in the comb, ends staying smoother between washes, less mid-length snapping.
Week seven to twelve: improved wet elasticity, styles holding longer, colour fading more slowly.
Month four to six: the compounding phase. New growth is undamaged, trims have removed the worst of the old ends, and the overall condition improves faster than any single product could explain.
That is the honest arc of damage recovery. Products shorten it and protect the progress, habits determine whether it holds, and time and scissors do the rest.
Three versions of the routine, by budget
The minimum viable routine: one bond cleanse, one conditioner and one oil. Wash twice a week, condition the lengths, seal the ends, keep heat to once a week, sleep on silk. This alone changes damaged hair noticeably within a month, because most of the benefit comes from consistency and gentleness rather than from product count.
The standard routine: add a weekly masque and a leave-in. The masque is the repair session and the leave-in is the daily protection, and together they are the two additions that most reliably reduce breakage.
The complete routine: add the targeted serum and a split-end finisher, and alternate bond care with hydration according to the wet-stretch test. This is the version that produces the fastest visible turnaround, and it is also the one that most benefits from VIP pricing since you are reordering several items on a cycle.
Whichever version you choose, do not skip the trim. Scissors are the cheapest and most effective damage tool in the routine.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use protein or moisture?
If hair stretches and does not spring back, lean towards bond and protein-focused care. If it snaps dry and feels brittle, lean towards moisture. Most people need to alternate.
How soon will I notice a difference?
Feel and manageability change within two or three washes. Visible condition takes a few months.

RENEW is the short answer. The longer answer is that shampoo is only about a third of the job when hair is genuinely dry.
