How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?
Hair With MONAT · Updated August 4, 2026 · 5 min read

There is no universal number. Wash frequency is set by how quickly your scalp produces oil, how much product you use, how much you sweat and how dry your lengths are.
Rough guidelines
- Oily scalp, fine hair: daily to every other day, with a lightweight cleanse.
- Normal scalp, medium hair: two to three times a week.
- Dry or coarse hair: one to two times a week.
- Curly hair: once or twice a week.
- Coily hair: once a week or less.
- Colour-treated hair: as infrequently as your scalp comfortably allows.
About 'training' your hair
Sebum production is largely governed by hormones and genetics, not by how often you shampoo. What does change when you stretch washes is your tolerance for how your hair looks on day three, which is a real and useful adaptation, just not a physiological one.
How to stretch washes comfortably
- Keep conditioner strictly off the roots.
- Rinse for longer than feels necessary.
- Use root mousse rather than heavy creams.
- Wash your pillowcase and hairbrush weekly.
Five things that decide your correct washing frequency
Scalp oil production. This is the dominant factor and it is largely genetic and hormonal. An oily scalp needs more frequent cleansing, full stop, and the popular advice to wash less to train your scalp has no strong evidence behind it.
Hair texture. Straight hair shows oil within a day because sebum travels down the shaft easily. Curly and coily hair hides oil for days and dries out faster, so it washes less often by necessity.
Activity level. Sweat is not the same as sebum, but it dissolves and spreads it, and salt left on the scalp is irritating. Frequent exercisers wash more often, and that is entirely fine with a gentle cleanse.
Product load. Styling creams, gels, sprays, oils and especially dry shampoo all accumulate. The more you use, the more often you need to cleanse properly.
Environment. Cities, pollution, hard water, humidity and hats all shift the answer, usually towards washing more rather than less.
Frequency by hair type, with the right products for each
Fine and straight: every day to every other day with a light cleanse. Volumizing REVIVE Shampoo is the sensible everyday option, with conditioner on the ends only.
Medium and normal: two to three times a week. RENEW Shampoo and Conditioner cover most needs, with REPLENISH Masque weekly if the ends run dry.
Thick, coarse or wavy: twice a week, generous conditioner, masque weekly, oil on the ends.
Curly and coily: once or twice a week, with a co-wash or a refresh in between, plus RESTORE Leave-In Conditioner and REJUVENIQE Oil Intensive to maintain moisture between washes.
Colour-treated or chemically processed: two washes a week with BOND IQ Shampoo and Conditioner, avoiding the forty-eight hours immediately after a salon service.
Oily or congested scalp: three to five times a week with a scalp-balancing cleanse such as BE BALANCED, keeping conditioner off the scalp entirely.

Technique changes the answer more than frequency does
Wet the hair for a full thirty seconds before shampoo. Water alone removes a surprising amount of sweat and loose debris, and it lets a smaller amount of product spread further.
Emulsify in wet palms, then apply to the scalp. Applying neat shampoo to one spot creates uneven cleansing and wastes product.
Massage the skin for sixty seconds with fingertips. This is the cleaning step. Everything else is rinsing.
Do two short washes rather than one long one if you use styling products or dry shampoo.
Condition the lengths, comb it through, leave it two to three minutes and rinse thoroughly with cooler water. Under-rinsing is the most common reason people believe they need to wash more often than they do.
Dry shampoo, honestly assessed
Dry shampoo absorbs oil, it does not remove it, and it adds a starch or clay layer of its own. Used for one day it buys you time. Used for four consecutive days it produces a coated scalp, dull roots, itch and sometimes flaking that people mistake for dandruff.
The safe pattern is one day of dry shampoo followed by a wash, and a thorough double cleanse on that wash day. Apply it at the roots only, from a distance, and brush it through rather than leaving it sitting as visible powder.
If your roots feel coated rather than dirty, that is buildup, and it is fixed in one thorough wash rather than by buying another product. A scalp-focused cleanse such as BE BALANCED is the right tool for the reset.

How to stretch your wash cycle without punishing your scalp
Stretching is a reasonable goal for dry, curly or colour-treated hair, and a poor goal for a genuinely oily scalp. If you are stretching for the right reasons, do it gradually, adding half a day at a time over several weeks rather than jumping from two days to five.
Protect the roots by keeping hands out of your hair, tying it loosely at night on a silk pillowcase, and skipping heavy root products.
Refresh rather than rewash. A light mist of water with a little leave-in, scrunched or smoothed through the lengths, revives most styles, and a single drop of oil on the ends restores shine without touching the scalp.
Stop stretching immediately if the scalp becomes itchy, flaky, sore or spotty. Those are signals, not obstacles to push through, and a clean scalp is a precondition for healthy-looking hair rather than a compromise against it.

Three worked weekly schedules
Fine, oily, office-based: wash Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday with a light cleanse, conditioner on ends, mousse and a rough dry on wash days, no dry shampoo more than one day in a row.
Medium, colour-treated, gym three times a week: wash Tuesday and Friday with bond care, rinse and condition after gym sessions without shampoo, leave-in and heat protection before any hot tool, masque on Sunday.
Curly, dry, low manipulation: wash Sunday with a hydrating cleanse, masque the same day, style on soaking wet hair with leave-in and oil, refresh Wednesday with water and leave-in, protect nightly with a bonnet or silk pillowcase, repeat.

Four myths about washing frequency
Myth one, you can train your scalp to produce less oil. Sebum output is driven by hormones and genetics, not by how often you shampoo. What actually changes when you stretch washes is your tolerance for the look, not your oil production.
Myth two, washing daily damages hair. Washing daily with a gentle cleanse and conditioning the lengths is fine for many people, particularly those with oily scalps or who exercise often. Damage comes from heat, chemistry and friction, not from water.
Myth three, shedding in the shower means the shampoo is bad. Wash day collects several days of hairs that had already released. Shedding fifty to a hundred hairs a day is normal, and it appears concentrated in the shower simply because that is when you handle your hair most.
Myth four, more lather means cleaner hair. Sulfate-free formulas foam less by design and still cleanse effectively. If the hair feels coated after one wash, the answer is a second short cleanse, not a harsher product.
