Hair Oil vs Hair Serum
Hair With MONAT · Updated August 4, 2026 · 5 min read

Oils and serums look similar on a shelf and behave very differently on hair. Knowing which does what saves money and prevents the greasy-but-still-dry outcome that frustrates so many people.
The core difference
- Oils are lipid-based. They sit on and within the outer layers of the hair, sealing moisture in and adding shine.
- Serums are usually lighter and often water-compatible. They deliver conditioning agents and smooth the surface quickly.
- Oils are best on dry, coarse, textured hair. Serums suit fine hair and anyone who dislikes a heavy finish.
How to layer them
- 01Leave-in conditioner on soaking wet hair.
- 02Serum on damp hair, the Double-Action Hydrating Serum, for example.
- 03Style and dry.
- 04Oil last, on dry hair, as the sealing and shine step.
Which MONAT product for which job
- REJUVENIQE® Oil Intensive, the versatile oil for shine, sealing and pre-wash treatments.
- Double-Action Hydrating Serum, fast hydration on damp or dry lengths.
- BOND IQ™ Recovery Serum, targeted care for fragile, over-processed ends.
What the two words actually mean on a label
An oil is a lipid product. It is built from plant or synthetic oils, it works primarily by coating and sealing the fibre, and it improves softness, shine and manageability while reducing friction. Some oils also penetrate the cortex to a degree, which reduces protein loss during washing.
A serum is a delivery format rather than an ingredient category. It is a lightweight, concentrated product designed to spread thinly and deposit specific actives, and depending on the formula it can be silicone-led for smoothing, water-led for hydration, or actives-led for a scalp or bond-care purpose.
That difference explains the confusion. Two products labelled serum can do entirely different jobs, whereas two products labelled oil almost always do the same job with different weights. The right question is never oil or serum, it is what am I trying to change: shine and slip, frizz control, hydration, bond support, or the look of scalp density.
When an oil is the right answer
Choose an oil when the hair looks dull, feels rough, tangles easily, or loses moisture quickly through the day. Oil is also the correct choice as the final sealing layer over any water-based product, because sealing is exactly what lipids do best.
REJUVENIQE Oil Intensive is the versatile option here, light enough for fine hair when dosed at a single drop and rich enough for coarse hair at four or five. Apply to damp hair for even distribution, press rather than rake, and stay below the ears unless you are doing a pre-wash scalp treatment.
Oil is also the right tool for a weekly pre-wash treatment on a tight or dry scalp, for overnight ends care, and for cuticles, elbows and dry shins when the bottle is nearly finished.
Oil is the wrong tool if you want to change the hair's internal condition. It cannot rebuild bonds or repair splits, and no oil from any brand can.

When a serum is the right answer
Choose a serum when you need a specific active delivered somewhere specific. The BOND IQ Recovery Serum targets the structurally weakest sections of chemically or thermally damaged hair, and it is used sparingly on ends rather than all over.
The IR CLINICAL Intense Repair Serum is a scalp product, not a hair product. It is applied to a towel-dried scalp in sections and left on so that it has contact time, and it is the reason the IR CLINICAL system works as a system rather than as a shampoo.
REJUVABEADS sits in its own category, a targeted cosmetic finisher for the appearance of split, frayed ends, applied to the last two inches only.
On the skincare side the Double Action Hydrating Serum shows the same principle in a different context: a lightweight format built to deliver hydration to facial skin, which is a different job again from a body or hair oil.

Layering order, because using both is usually correct
On wash day, the order is leave-in first, treatment serum second, oil last. Water-based products go on before lipids, because a lipid layer applied first blocks everything that follows.
In practice that means RESTORE Leave-In Conditioner or the BOND IQ Leave-In Crème on damp hair, then a targeted serum on the sections that need it, then one to four drops of oil pressed through the bottom two thirds, then styling and drying.
Scalp serums break the rule deliberately: they go directly on the skin and nothing goes on top of them, because a barrier over an active defeats the point.
On dry hair between washes, use a single drop of oil for shine or a tiny amount of a smoothing product on the surface only. Reapplying rich leave-ins to dry hair usually looks heavy rather than hydrated.

Dosing, the part that determines whether either product works
Fine hair: one drop of oil, ends only, on damp hair. A pea-sized amount of any serum, and only where the problem is.
Medium hair: two to three drops of oil, a small amount of serum concentrated on ends.
Coarse, curly or coily hair: four to six drops of oil applied in sections, generous leave-in underneath, serum on the most damaged pieces.
The universal error is applying to soaking wet hair, where oil skates off, or to bone-dry hair, where it sits in streaks. Damp is the sweet spot for both formats, and warming the product between the palms before application improves spread more than any technique tweak.
Choosing one if you can only buy one
If your hair is healthy but dull, dry or frizzy, buy the oil. It is the more versatile purchase, it works on hair, scalp and skin, and correctly dosed a bottle lasts months.
If your hair is bleached, breaking or genuinely damaged, buy the bond-care serum and pair it with the matching cleanse, because structure has to be addressed before shine is worth chasing.
If your concern is at the scalp, whether that is the look of thinning or general scalp comfort, buy the scalp serum and use it daily, because contact time is the entire mechanism.
And if you are unsure, start with the oil. It is the least likely purchase to be wrong, it complements every other product on this site, and it is the fastest way to see whether your hair responds to sealing before you invest in a full system.

Mistakes that apply to both formats
Applying to the wrong part of the hair. Finishing products belong on the bottom two thirds, scalp products belong on the skin, and split-end products belong on the last two inches. Most disappointment with either format is a placement error rather than a formula problem.
Using too much and then over-washing to correct it, which strips the hair and restarts the dryness cycle. Under-apply, assess the next day, and add a drop if needed.
Expecting either format to survive heat unprotected. A leave-in or protective crème goes under the hot tool, and a drop of oil goes on the ends, not the other way round on soaking hair.
Storing them badly. Botanical oils oxidise in light and heat, so keep them out of a sunny bathroom window, and check the period-after-opening symbol if a bottle has been sitting for a year.
Judging in a day. Shine and slip show immediately, but reduced breakage, better colour retention and healthier-looking ends take weeks, and those are the results worth measuring.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use both on the same day?
Yes, serum on damp hair, oil on dry hair as the final step.
Which is better for fine hair?
