Why an Abyssinian-led blend behaves differently from coconut or argan

Not all oils interact with hair the same way. Eight ways to use it, from the obvious to the ones nobody mentions

Pre-wash scalp treatment. Section the hair, apply directly to the scalp, massage for two minutes and leave for twenty before shampooing. This is the single most popular use and the most comfortable one for a tight or dry scalp.

Finishing oil on damp hair. Two to four drops warmed in the palms, pressed through the bottom two thirds after washing. Damp application spreads more evenly than dry application and uses less product.

Dry refresh. One or two drops on the ends the next day to control flyaways and restore shine without rewashing.

Pre-heat buffer over a leave-in. Apply a leave-in first, then one drop of oil on the ends before blow-drying so the most fragile part of the hair is not the least protected.

Medium hair: two to three drops on damp mid-lengths and ends, plus a pre-wash scalp treatment once a week.

The universal technique rule is to press rather than rake. Warming the oil between your palms and pressing it into the hair coats the outside of the section evenly, whereas raking with fingers concentrates it in streaks and makes half the head look greasy while the other half looks untouched.

The five mistakes that give hair oils a bad reputation

Using it on soaking wet hair. Water and oil do not mix, and the oil skates off rather than absorbing. Towel-dry to damp first.

Applying at the root on fine hair. Unless it is a pre-wash treatment that you are washing out, keep it below the ears.

Using too much and then over-washing to fix it, which strips the hair and starts the dryness cycle again. Under-apply and add a drop if needed.

Expecting an oil to repair damage. Oils improve feel, shine and manageability and reduce friction, which prevents future breakage. They do not rebuild bonds or fuse split ends, and no oil from any brand does.
