MONAT IR CLINICAL: What You Need to Know
Hair With MONAT · Updated August 20, 2026 · 7 min read

IR CLINICAL™ is MONAT's most clinical-sounding line and that name does a lot of heavy lifting in conversation. It is worth understanding exactly what the system is and, just as importantly, what it is not.
What IR CLINICAL is
It is a cosmetic haircare system with a scalp-first design: a thorough cleansing shampoo, a lightweight conditioner that will not flatten fine hair and a leave-on scalp serum that does the daily work. An ingestible hair supplement is available as a companion.
What IR CLINICAL is not
It is not a drug and not a medical hair-loss treatment. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition and nobody selling it should tell you otherwise. Medical hair loss, androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata and the rest, belongs with a physician or dermatologist.
How to use the system properly
- 01Cleanse with the IRT Shampoo, spending a genuine 60 seconds massaging the scalp.
- 02Condition mid-lengths to ends only.
- 03Towel-dry until hair is damp, not dripping.
- 04Section the hair and apply the Intense Repair Serum directly onto scalp skin.
- 05Massage in with fingertips and leave on. Repeat daily as directed.
What to expect and when
Consistency matters far more than quantity. Skipping the serum four days a week will produce nothing regardless of how good the formula is. Take a baseline photo, use the system daily for several months, then compare in the same lighting.
Why a scalp-first system is different from a hair-first one
Most haircare is aimed at the fibre, which is dead keratin and can only be coated, smoothed or temporarily reinforced. Scalp care is aimed at living skin, and living skin responds to its environment. That is the entire reason a scalp-focused system is structured differently from a shampoo and conditioner pair.
The scalp is skin with an unusually high follicle density, an active sebaceous output and its own microbiome. It accumulates sebum, sweat, dead skin, styling polymers, dry shampoo starch and pollution. Left in place, that mixture flattens hair at the root, dulls shine, and creates the itch-scratch cycle that damages the emerging fibre.
IR CLINICAL is built on that logic: cleanse the scalp thoroughly, keep the lengths conditioned without transferring weight to the root, and leave an active serum on the scalp daily so that the ingredients have contact time rather than being rinsed away after ninety seconds.
The three steps in order, with the technique that makes them work
Step one is the Intense Repair Treatment Shampoo. Treat it as a facial cleanse for your scalp. Wet thoroughly, emulsify, apply to the skin in sections, and massage with fingertips in small circles for sixty seconds. Do not use nails. Rinse for longer than you think is necessary, because residue at the root undoes everything the serum is about to do.
Step two is the Intense Repair Treatment Conditioner, mid-lengths to ends only. Fine and thinning-looking hair reads root conditioner as weight, and weight is the enemy of visible density.
Step three is the Intense Repair Serum. Towel-dry until the hair is damp rather than wet, then part and apply directly to the scalp, working across the crown, the part line and the temples. Massage it in with your fingertips for thirty seconds to spread it evenly, then style as normal. It is a leave-on product, so there is no rinsing and no waiting.
The IR CLINICAL Hair Supplement is optional and separate. It is an ingestible, so treat it like any supplement: check the label, check for interactions with your medication, and speak to your own doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a health condition.

What IR CLINICAL is not, said clearly
It is not a drug. It does not claim to regrow hair, treat androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, telogen effluvium or any other medical condition, and no cosmetic product legally can. Anyone telling you otherwise is either mistaken or selling badly.
It is not a substitute for a diagnosis. If your hair is coming out in handfuls, if there are defined bald patches, if the scalp is painful, flaking heavily or inflamed, or if the loss arrived with fatigue, weight changes or a new prescription, the appropriate next step is a GP or dermatologist who can test ferritin, thyroid function and hormones.
It is not fast. Cosmetic scalp routines work on the appearance of density, and the appearance of density improves as buildup clears, styling improves and the hair that is growing is treated more gently. Ninety days is the minimum fair trial, and photographs are the only honest measurement.
Stacking IR CLINICAL with the rest of a routine
The most useful addition is volume styling, because it produces the visible change while the scalp routine does the slow work. MOXIE Magnifying Mousse at the root before a rough dry adds lift, and Flex Control Hairspray sets the shape without gluing strands together.
On days when you want a lighter cleanse, Volumizing REVIVE Shampoo slots in without disturbing the system, and Volumizing REVITALIZE Conditioner keeps the ends comfortable without weighing the root.
A weekly pre-wash scalp massage with REJUVENIQE Oil Intensive is a pleasant addition for anyone whose scalp feels tight, provided you shampoo thoroughly afterwards. Do not layer heavy oil on top of the serum on the same day, because the serum needs skin contact, not a barrier over it.
What not to stack: two competing scalp actives from different brands at once. If you are using a medicated treatment prescribed by a doctor, follow their instructions first and ask them where a cosmetic serum fits around it.

Troubleshooting the four most common complaints
The hair feels drier since starting. Almost always the conditioner is being under-applied on the lengths because the routine is focused on the scalp. Add REPLENISH Masque once a week on mid-lengths and ends, and the dryness resolves without compromising the scalp work.
The scalp feels tight or itchy. Reduce to two washes a week, make sure you are rinsing completely, and stop scratching with nails during the massage. If irritation persists beyond a fortnight, stop and speak to a professional. Persistent irritation is a signal, not a phase to push through.
The roots look flat by day two. Check three things: conditioner reaching the scalp, under-rinsing, and dry shampoo buildup. Fix all three before blaming the system.
Nothing has changed at eight weeks. That is normal and expected. Reassess at twelve weeks with photographs, and if there is still nothing, that is genuinely useful information that points towards a medical rather than a cosmetic answer.

Cost, VIP pricing and whether the system justifies itself
A full system is a meaningful monthly commitment at retail pricing, and the honest framing is that it competes with salon-tier scalp care rather than with drugstore shampoo. Two things change the maths. The first is the VIP customer programme, which gives discounted pricing on the same products with a flexible recurring order you control. The second is usage discipline, because most people use two to three times as much shampoo as they need and burn through a bottle in half the time it should last.
If you are going to buy the system, buy it as a system and commit to a quarter. Buying one piece, using it inconsistently and stopping at six weeks is the most expensive version of this purchase, because it costs money and produces no information about whether the routine would have worked for you.
How to measure progress properly
Take three photographs on day one: the parting from directly above, the hairline from the front, and the ponytail circumference against a ruler or a hair tie. Same light, same angle, dry unstyled hair. Repeat at six weeks and twelve weeks.
Track two other numbers informally. How many hairs collect in your brush on a typical day, and how long the roots stay lifted after washing. Both change earlier than density does and both are useful signals.
Do not judge the system on how the hair looks after a blow-dry, because styling dominates that result. Judge it on unstyled hair in daylight, and give it the full twelve weeks before you decide.
